a mentor

I bought about thirty dollars worth of photography books at the used bookstore yesterday. Turns out that the elderly man behind the counter is an avid photographer himself. He also owns about ten different cameras.

Sweet.

We talked for maybe two hours about it. He gave me very good advice with things like aperture and shutter speed, and advantages and disadvantages of mechanical and electronic cameras etc.

But I'm not going to forget what he told me next, "My father was a photographer and this was quite possibly the best piece of advice he ever gave me: 'Good photos capture the spirit of the subject, conveying its unique aspects and features, giving it expression and meaning.' Go out there and shoot."

Jen had to get home then, so I said goodbye and that I'd be back to talk to him some more.

I think I just found a mentor.
